Val Galpin
ALL ABOUT THE DRESS

Oil on canvas
Picture
When Val grew up in the 1950s, life was pretty drab. In her home there were lots of rules which good girls had to follow. Life was full of “don’t do that” “be careful” “be a good girl” and “mind the edge”. Usually, Val wore hand-me-down clothes from her older cousins. When Val was six, her Mother made her a brand new, pink taffeta and net, party dress. This new frock was revelatory. Wearing it made Val full of hope, confidence and ambition. She was certain that a better life lay ahead and that she could achieve anything that she set her mind to. Rainbows are the colourful embodiment of the transitory nature of life and give us hope for the future.

Through 2019-20 Val concentrated on painting a series of empathetic work focusing on “humanity”.  It comprised simple images of people, reflecting attitudes or feelings. Sometimes lone figures others in couples or in groups.   She took photographs of people in street scenes, cropped out the individuals and removed the background surroundings, so that their personal situation and sensation, as expressed in their body language, is the focus.  Her “Boundaries” entry is a personal take on the subject and is planned to be the start of a new series reflecting childhood memories of familial relationships.
