Bruno Cavellec
THE OTHER SIDE OF HOPE

Picture
For all the apparent expansion of freedom in modern times, most countries’ political boundaries have remained fixed and rigid. And although capital and goods flow relatively freely, human beings’ ability to move between countries or change their citizenship is severely limited. In this photograph, Bruno pays tribute to all those who tried to escape oppression and find sanctuary, only to be spotted and stopped in their tracks. The unknown figure has almost reached refuge, represented by the tower, but hangs lifeless on the fence that he has just climbed. We can only imagine his last thought: “I’d rather die on this fence, trying to free myself, than remain a captive for the rest of my life.” In the context of a growing massive inequality, the artist asks the observer: “how different would your life be if you had been born in a different country?“
