During lockdown in 2020, Val embarked on a new series
of work, loosely entitled “modern florals”. At the same
time she discovered that she enjoyed using a new
medium with her oil paints - cold wax. This provides a
greater degree of flexibility with the paint and enables
both translucent layering and textured relief.
The aim of this series is to evoke the sensations of the
flowers rather than a too literal reproduction of their
beauty. At the time of writing, this project is in its
infancy and only time will tell what exactly will result.
Now operating from a new address in Onchan, Val is
unable to open her studio this year but plans to be
showing during the IOM Art Festival at one of the venues
in the east of the Island.
